Giant sequoia

The greatest, most massive and majestic of trees, this extremely long-lived evergreen species develops a conical to narrow pyramidal habit with a massive buttressed trunk. Although it is not as tall as Sequoia sempervirens, it can produce trunks in excess of 30' in diameter and live in excess of 3,500 years!

Habit:Narrow pyramidal with a strong central leader and uniform with a slightly open crown and bunchy foliage; limbs itself up over time and forms a massive trunk that is widely buttressed at the base; lateral branches are thin and horizontal becoming drooping,
Size:60-100' high in cultivation, 250-300' in the wild
Color:Light bluish green
Texture:Medium-fine
Hardiness:Zone 7a USDA
Habitat:Native only to a small part of California on west-facing slopes in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains from 4,500 to 8000' elevation
Family:Taxodiaceae
