| Sequoiadendron giganteum Giant sequoiaAppearing much like that of a juniper, the evergreen foliage is divided into two lengths. At branch tips, the 1/8 - 1/4" long leaves are lanceolate to ovate in shape, sharply acuminate and closely overlapped on the branch in whorls of three. On older stems, the sharp needles have a gradually tapered and divergent 1/4" blade with decurrent bases that run at least 1/2" down the stems. The leaves persist for about four years and have stomatal bands on both sides. The juniper-like foliage easily distinguishes this species from the 1"-long yew-like foliage of Sequoia sempervirens. |
