Spiraea thunbergii
Thunberg spirea

The earliest of the spireas to flower, this species produces large numbers of simple, 5-petaled flowers that line the branches in early spring. In central Illinois, the flowers have opened as early as the third week in March, but more typically occur in the first week of April. They produce a beautiful display, completely covering the branches. The 5/16" diameter flowers occur in sessile umbels of 3-5 flowers. Their petals are obovate and are distinctly longer than the stamens.
