| Taxodium distichum Common baldcypressThe unusual looking oval-rounded cones are up to 1" in diameter and have an interesting surface pattern created by the scales. The triangular or pie-shaped scales tightly overlap, unlike the loose open scales found in the cones of many other conifers. The developing cones are resinous and light purple turning to green by late summer and maturing to brown at the end of the first year. Their unusual appearance can be mis-identified as being an insect or disease gall, prompting calls to local tree care professionals. |
