| Hibiscus syriacus Rose-of-sharonCulture: This species transplants easily and grows in most any soil accept those that are extremely wet. It is pH adaptable and will grow in full sun or part shade. Some pruning may be required in spring to remove stems killed by winter injury. Some gardeners prune each stem back to a few buds each spring to encourage development of larger flowers. The potential problems are leaf spot and blight, canker, rust, aphids and white-fly.Usage: Grown almost exclusively for its large flowers, this species is often used as a specimen plant; however, its less than formal habit often leads to a less-than-desireable specimen. It can be used for screening or along fences behind other smaller materials that cover its leggy base. |
