Acer negundo
Boxelder

Culture: This native species is extremely easy to grow and fast growing. It prefers moist sites and it is extremely messy and frequently becomes a weed problem, and often has problems with lost branches because of its weak wood.

Boxelders have several problems including orange and black boxelder bugs, cottony maple scale, leaf galls of several types, borers, cankers, leaf spots and many other problems.

Usage: Boxelders are not ideal landscape plants due to their weedy and invasive natures. As a native species, however, they do have their worth, and often provide wildlife cover in wetlands, bottomland forests, and along streambanks. In the dry western states, where few trees survive, a Boxelder may be an owner's pride and joy. The variegated selections do merit attention for their bright foliage and non-invasive nature.
