Chionanthus virginicus
White fringetree

Appearing in late May to early June, the 6-8" white panicles are very showy, forming fragrant, billowy masses. The flowers have 4 narrow strap-like petals that are just over 1/16" wide and 5/8 - 1 1/4" long. They are either dioecious or polygamo-dioecious, so both sexes should be planted to encourage fruiting on female plants. There is a trade-off for fruiting, as male flowers tend to be longer and slightly more showy. The effectiveness varies with the density of flowering that can range from moderately showy in more sparse flowering years to very showy when masses of the flowers mask all of the foliage.
