| Chionanthus virginicus White fringetreeCulture: Preferring moist acid soils in full sun to partial shade, the fringetree is fairly adaptable. Its moderate transplantability results in it being sold as either B&B or container specimens. Care should be taken when moving larger specimens. Although problems are not common on this plant, powdery mildew, borers, and canker have been reported.Usage: A beautiful native species, the fringetree makes an excellent landscape specimen. Flowering at a time when there is little else to stimulate the eye, the billowy masses of white flowers are always exciting to behold. Its size and habit lend it best to specimen or group plantings. Because it is a native wetland species, it makes a welcome addition to restored sites, providing food for local fauna. |
