Cornus florida
Flowering dogwood

Showy bright white bracts are the attractive part of the inflorescence. The bracts are borne in 4's and each one is 2" long and has a notched apex. The true flowers are greenish yellow and uninteresting. The display is often spectacular and the bloom period occurs in late April or early May and lasts for 10 to 14 days. The heavy flower displays serve to highlight the horizontal branching pattern. Cold winter temperatures may cause a browning of the bracts, reduce the bract number to 2 or even eliminate flowering completely. A host of pink to red flowered selections also exist.
