Angled, green to yellow-green in summer, glabrous, and smooth. Ilex aquifolium x Ilex rugosa crosses have strongly angled stems that turn distinctly purple in the winter. Ilex cornuta and Ilex rugosa crosses are less angled and have yellow-green winter stem color.
