Populus tremuloides
Quaking aspen

Both flower and vegetative buds occur on this species. The vegetative buds are narrow conical and sharp pointed, 1/3 - 1/2" long and are dark brown and glossy. The flower buds are also dark brown and glossy but they much fatter and longer, ovate and 1/3 - 1/2" long. The flower buds also have a curvature that appresses a portion of the bud to the stem. The bud scales are reddish brown at their base and dark brown at the apex.
