Variable in color and quality, the bark on young trees varies from a poor greenish white or gray-green to an excellent chalky white with irregular black patches. Native specimens in the eastern part of the US tend to have greenish white bark, while many Western trees have very handsome chalky white bark with black patches that increase in size over time. The bark of the trees in the Rockies rivals that of the best white-barked birches.
