Prunus serrulata Oriental cherryCulture: This species is best cultivated in acidic to neutral soils and full sun. Pruning is seldom required. Unfortunately this species is frequently short-lived due to viruses, borers and canker. In northern climates branch dieback is common due to cold injury. Graft union incompatibilities can also occur with age. Usage: The stiff and formal vase-shaped habit of the heavily flowering 'Kwanzan' is the standard form in the trade. Many lovely and more graceful cultivars exist, such as: 'Shirotae' ('Mt. Fugi'), 'Shogetsu' ('Shimidsu') and 'Shirofugen'. They make excellent specimens, especially when used with an evergreen backdrop. |
