Prunus virginiana
Chokecherry

The pendulous racemes bear 1/4 - 1/3" globose drupes that turn from red to dark purple-black in August. The unripe fruits are highly astringent, hence the name chokecherry, while mature fruits are merely very tart but edible. As kids we used to feast on these fruits while adults found them quite unappealing. Selections with less astringent fruits, such as 'Boughen's Chokeless' are available.
