Prunus virginiana

Prunus virginiana
Chokecherry

Culture: The Common chokecherry is a tough and adaptable plant often found natively in old fencerows, abandoned fields and along the edge of woods and roadsides. It is pH adaptable and tolerates moist to dry sites. This pioneer species is fast-growing and fairly short-lived. The edible fruits attract birds that spread the seeds. It is fibrous rooted and easy to transplant.

Although a tough tree, it is susceptible to black knot disease on the branches and is also somewhat weak-wooded, losing branches to ice storms.

Usage: The species is most commonly found in places seeded by the birds and is not heavily sold in the trade. By some, it is considered a weed tree because of its ability to sprout through out the landscape. When found, it is most often used for naturalizing or in difficult sites. Its purple-leaved form, 'Shubert' is much more commonly cultivated.
