Closely resembling those of Quercus rubra, the oblong to obovate leaves are 4 to 10" long, alternate, simple and have 5 to 9 bristle-tipped lobes. The upper surface is a dark glossy green while the undersurface is a slightly glossy yellowish green with some tufts of tan hairs in the axils of the veins. The petioles on this species turn yellow in the late summer in contrast to the red petioles of Quercus rubra.
