Distinctly long and grayish tan pubescent, the strongly 5-angled buds are imbricate, conical and 1/4 to 1/3" long. The dense gray pubescence covers the buds from their base to the tip, distinguishing this species from the buds of Quercus rubra that have only limited rusty pubescence at their apex and Quercus coccinea that have pubescence only on the upper 1/2.
