| Quercus velutina
Black oakThe stout, shiny yellowish-brown stems have a slight greenish cast and are fairly heavily dotted with prominent light gray-tan lenticels. The young stems of this species may be lightly pubescent early in the first part of the season becoming glabrous as they mature. The stems contain a yellow dye that can be seen when they are scratched open. Although some of the old identification keys indicate that chewing of the twigs turns the saliva yellow, I find few of my students willing to check out this feature! |
