The dark brown acorns of this species are 3/4" long, striated and generally borne in pairs. The deep acorn caps are softly tan-brown pubescent and cover about 1/2 of the nut. The cap scales are free at their ends forming a fringe of hairs at the base of the cap. Like other members of the red-black oak group they mature their acorns in 2 years. The previous season's stems therefore bear small 1/8" one-year acorns.
