Rhododendron catawbiense
Catawba rhododendron

The large terminal flower buds range from 1 - 11/4" long, providing a obvious winter identification feature. The light green to yellow-green buds are fat, ovate, and coarsely imbricate. Varying amounts of tan coloration can develop depending upon the degree of winter injury.
