Rhododendron catawbiense
Catawba rhododendron

Beautifully showy, the lilac-purple or white flowers of the species are borne terminally in 5-6" diameter trusses in mid-May, with green or yellow-brown markings inside the corolla. The bell-shaped corolla has 5 lobes and surrounds 10 stamens. Hybridization efforts have produced plants with gorgeous displays of red, purple, pink, peach and chartreuse.
