Heavily suckered from the base, the relatively straight and thin upright stems, hence the name arrowwood, mature to a gray or grayish brown, and are glabrous. The young stems are reddish brown to yellowish brown in color and have small decurrent ridges and typically grow slightly crooked, forming helpful identification features. Some onion-skin appearance may also be present on young stems.
