Changing from lustrous green to greenish brown and finally to reddish-brown, the aromatic stems are surrounded by distinct stipular scars. The stems are lightly dotted with gray lenticels that ultimately break open as the stem fissures slightly. The leaf scars are large and oval-rounded.
