| Liriodendron tulipifera Tuliptree,Yellow poplarCulture: Best in full sun, tuliptrees prefer moist, well-drained soils. If a site is too dry, leaf scorch may occur. Trees planted on the Urbana campus have fared poorly in small street planters. Leaf scorch, cankers, Verticillium wilt, aphids, and scales can be problems with these trees. In central Illinois, this species has shown intermediate resistance/susceptibility to ice storm damage. Usage: If one has room for this tree, then by all means, plant it! It makes an excellent specimen tree. Although interesting in flowering, the good fall color and habit provide interest throughout other seasons. For full flower effect, it is best used in situations where it is looked down upon, such as retaining walls, cliff faces, or from buildings. Also, as a native species it is well suited for native plantings and restorations. |
