Alternate, simple and large, the 4-10" leaves are elliptic to oblong-ovate and entire with some undulation. The leaves are dark green above with a light green underside. The leaf apex is acuminate and the base is cordate to rounded. Stipules attached to the base of the petiole early in the season encircle the stem, resulting in the stipular scar that surrounds the stem at every node.
