Appearing for only a short time in October, the 2-3" pinkish-red fruit are a bumpy irregularly shaped aggregate of follicles. With a great deal of imagination, one might be able to see that the tree gets its common name from the cucumber-like shape of the fruit. Upon maturity, the follicles split open to reveal the bright orange-red arils covering the seeds that are suspended by a thin thread for a brief day or two.
