Magnolia acuminata
Cucumbertree magnolia

Culture: Like other magnolias, the Cucumbertree magnolia prefers loamy, moist, well-drained soils that are slightly acidic. Full sun is best, although partial shade can be tolerated. Because the roots are thick and fleshy and they tend to grow downward rather than out, it is moderate to transplant. Sites exposed to pollutants are not good for this tree.

Generally a very trouble-free species, but scale can be a problem on occasion.

Usage: An interesting native species, it is probably best suited for planting in large parks, golf courses or large-scale landscapes because of its sheer size. Flint reports that this species is not ideal for street tree plantings because of a tendency to suffer from ice damage. The yellow-flowered variety subcordata is the main parent of a host of new yellow-flowered cultivars.
