Philadelphus coronarius
Sweet mockorange

The young stems are yellow-brown turning a deep reddish brown in their second year. The first and second year stems are somewhat lined or striated and second-year stems begin to exfoliate. On young stems the exfoliation can take the form of small chips of bark that flake off revealing a grayish tan undercolor. Although the young stems of Kolkwitzia amabilis can also exfoliate in a similar manner, the stems of mockorange are not nearly as fine. On old stems near the base of the sweet mockorange plant, the bark can peel off in large brown sheets.
