Philadelphus coronarius
Sweet mockorange

White, fragrant and 4-petaled, the 1 1/2" flowers occur in late May to early June. The orange-scented flowers have numerous stamens and are borne on racemes. The overall effect is moderately showy with the white flowers contrasting nicely with the dark green foliage. Prior to moving graduation ceremonies up to mid-May, many college campuses had numerous plantings of this species that would flower in early June.
