Philadelphus coronarius
Sweet mockorange

Culture: The Sweet mockorange prefers full sun to part shade in moist, organic and well drained sites. This species does tolerate dry soils. Pruning should be done in the late spring after flowering, by cutting the largest stems back to the ground. If greatly overgrown, the entire plant may be cut back to the ground if it is otherwise healthy.

A variety of minor insect and disease problems can be found on this species, but they are rarely of a serious nature.

Usage: This is a nice plant for the scented late spring flowers; however, it offers little else during the rest of the year. It has been replaced in many landscapes in favor of multi-season plants. It may be used as a specimen or an informal hedge or screen. Some of the newer forms offer double flowers, dwarf sizes and yellow foliage.
